Construction of the future largest power-to-heat plant in Europe has reached a major milestone in the Hanasaari district of Helsinki. On 16 April, FILTER successfully installed the fourth and final 50 MW electrode boiler.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the installation completed, all four 50 MW electrode boilers are now in place, forming a total plant capacity of 200 MW. Once commissioned, the facility will enable district heat production using electricity when renewable power is abundant and market prices are favorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project highlights the growing role of power-to-heat technologies in making heat production more flexible, energy-efficient, and lower in emissions. The solution also supports the transition away from combustion-based heat production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FILTER is responsible for the installation of the plant\u2019s electrode boiler systems and continues work on the next stages of the project together with project partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric boilers increase energy flexibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the key advantages of electrode boilers is their fast responsiveness to changes in the electricity market. Heat production can be rapidly increased when electricity availability is high and prices are low, while production can be reduced during periods of higher electricity demand and pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four boilers installed at the Hanasaari facility are capable of supplying a significant share of Helsinki\u2019s district heating demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In combination with large-scale thermal energy storage, the solution will help improve energy system flexibility, optimize the use of renewable electricity, and support a more stable and sustainable heating infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next stages of the project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With all main equipment now installed, work at the site continues with piping and electrical installations, followed by testing, certification, and commissioning activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant is scheduled to enter operation during the 2026\u20132027 heating season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
