FILTER delivers 4x50MW electrode boilers for Helen’s boiler plant

Helen Ltd, one of the largest utility companies in Finland, is revolutionising district heating by building Europe’s largest heat production complex in the Hanasaari energy block in Helsinki.

The complex will combine an electric boiler plant and two thermal batteries, scheduled to be commissioned during the 2026–2027 heating season. FILTER Powering Industry will provide design, installation, and commissioning of the 200 MW electric boiler plant. The solution consists of four 50 MW Zander & Ingeström electrode boilers, along with Eurowater water treatment system.

The heat storage facility (not within Filter’s scope) will be built next to the plant and will consist of two heat batteries, with a combined capacity of 1,000 MWh. Once the thermal batteries are connected to the electric boiler plant, they will create an innovative energy complex. Its key advantage lies in its flexibility between heat and electricity generation.

“The plant, operating as a single complex, will be able to efficiently exploit the volatility of the electricity market by storing electricity at lower spot prices and then providing it as heat at a competitive price to our customers. On the other hand, heat storage can also be discharged, allowing it to offset the highest spot electricity prices. In addition, the plant’s production is climate-friendly as the electricity it uses is produced in a CO2-free manner,”

says Juhani Aaltonen, VP, Green Investments at Helen.
